How to Maintain Your Gel Manicure at Home

April 3, 2025 Rachel Jeanty

There’s nothing like the glossy perfection of a fresh gel manicure—especially in a place like New York, where we’re always on the move. But if you’ve ever had your gel polish start chipping before you were ready for a salon visit, you know the struggle. Luckily, keeping your gel manicure looking flawless at home is easier than you think!

As someone who loves a fresh mani but doesn’t always have time for biweekly appointments, I’ve perfected a routine to extend the life of my gel nails between my mobile in-home manicure appointments. And trust me, it makes all the difference.

1. Hydration is Key

Gel polish can be drying, especially in the colder months when our hands need extra care. Cuticle oil is your best friend—I swear by applying it every night before bed. Not only does it keep your nails flexible (reducing breakage), but it also prevents that dreaded lifting at the cuticle.

💡 Pro Tip: Keep a bottle of cuticle oil in your bag or at your desk. A quick midday refresh can keep your manicure looking salon-fresh.

2. Use a Protective Top Coat

One of my go-to products for keeping my gel manicure intact is the Naked Manicure Defend and Shine Kit by Zoya. It adds an extra layer of protection against wear and tear while reviving that just-done shine. If you notice dullness or minor scratches, applying a thin layer every few days will work wonders.

3. Avoid Hot Water (Yes, Really!)

Long showers, dishwashing, and steamy baths can weaken gel polish over time. If you’ve ever noticed your gel lifting after a long soak, now you know why! To protect your nails:

  • Wear gloves when doing dishes or cleaning.

  • Try lukewarm water when washing your hands instead of super hot.

  • If your gel starts lifting slightly, resist the urge to peel it (more on that below).

4. Strengthen with the Right Products

If you’re thinking long-term nail health, the Bio Seaweed Gel Polish line is a game changer. It’s a breathable formula that doesn’t damage the natural nail underneath, which means less breakage and healthier growth. Another favorite of mine is Orly Gel FX Gel Polish—infused with vitamins A & E to help keep nails strong.

💡 Fun Fact: Did you know Orly’s Gel FX system was the first vitamin-infused gel polish? No wonder it keeps nails looking so healthy!

5. Resist the Peel! (And Remove Gel the Right Way)

I know, I know. When your gel starts to lift at the edges, peeling it off is so tempting. But trust me—doing this can cause serious damage, leaving your nails thin and brittle. Instead, here’s the best way to remove gel at home:

  1. File the top layer to break the seal.

  2. Soak a cotton pad in acetone and place it on your nail.

  3. Wrap each finger in foil and wait about 10-15 minutes.

  4. Gently push off the gel with a cuticle pusher or orangewood stick.

  5. Moisturize immediately! (Cuticle oil + hand cream = lifesavers.)

6. Give Your Nails a Break

If your nails feel weak after back-to-back gel manicures, consider taking a break with a strengthening treatment like the Gelie-Cure Foundation Travel kit + Mini LED. Your nails will thank you.

Final Thoughts

Maintaining a gel manicure in New York doesn’t have to be high-maintenance. With the right care and a few must-have products, your mani can stay chip-free and glossy longer—saving you both time and money between appointments.
